Have yourself a merry eco Christmas

‘Tis the season! Time to Deck your halls…living rooms and dining rooms -heck deck all the rooms! There’s a ‘greener’ way to approach the holidays and get your home ready for seasonal guests and shenanigans! So here’s 5 easy wins on having yourself a very eco Christmas…

Top tips to decorating your home for Christmas in a more conscious way.

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree...

The centre piece of most homes, your tree is a key player in adding to the carbon footprint of your Christmas… but there are alternatives. The debate on which is worse from an environmental standpoint a real or faux tree isn’t straight forward! - I inherited a good quality faux tree which is out for it’s 19th year in our home-longevity is the key here if you do decide on faux-Reuse! If however, the only way is real, perhaps renting a tree is the way for you to go? Local to us is Rudies roots who offer a service of renting potted trees that live on rather than being left out looking dilapidated alongside your bin come the new year. Another option is to get creative and have an alternative tree for your home- there’s a plethora of options from driftwood wonders to foraged fallen branches-Everything looks festive in fairy lights!!

The holly that will be on your own front door…

When it comes to wreath making there are greener ways of going about it- ditching the oasis for moss is a great start (the oasis can only be used once). Decorating it with natural decorations such a pinecones, dried oranges and feathers or simply reusing bought decorations year after year. Alternative wreaths can make a wonderful decoration too- fabric scraps, wrapping paper and old magazines or newspaper can make for fabulous DIY wreaths for your home.

Merry and Bright…

Lighting as ever is key! Making the switch to LED fairy lights can make a big difference to your energy consumption over Christmas. There’s no doubt that they add a twinkle and really the more the merrier with these! Keeping it old school-reuse your empty wine bottles as candle holders. Bedecked with the simplicity of some scraps of wrapping paper and left over ribbon they can be very festive.

Come and trim my Christmas tree…

Now I’m not saying that all your ornaments need to come from Tiffany’s but there’s certainly something to be said for buying well and buying once at Christmas. Instead of cheap decorations that are swapped out every year it’s lovely to have a collection of treasured beauties that have been bought, homemade or gifted over the years. The memories of where or who they came from are often more precious than the ornaments themselves!

Simply having a wonderful Christmas time…

Keeping it simple can help you focus on what Christmas is really about- think comfort and joy! Lower the lights and make your home more festive in simple ways to indulge all your senses- light some lovely candles with festive scents, play your favourite Christmas music, perhaps grab a glass of hot mulled wine and a minced pie and cosy up with friends and family. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas from Gringley Bespoke.
